The Invite (2026)

23 Aug 2026

This evening, we set off walking toward Passage Kino for a screening of The Invite. It was a pleasantly cool evening. About halfway, I reached into my pocket and realised I wasn’t carrying my phone, which had the only means to get at our cinema tickets on it. After an awkward moment of hesitation, I set off alone back up the road in a sweaty powerwalk and Sarah carried on to buy snacks.

When I arrived at Passage with my phone, covered in sweat, Sarah was waiting in the cinema bar with a small sweet popcorn (for me, she prefers salted) and two glasses of white wine.

The cinema staff were almost as flustered as I was when we asked to be let through as the opening credits were rolling. Of course, we were sat on the far end of the row of seats, with many occupants already sitting in the way. I suggested we go around the front and we did, jostling wine out of our glasses in our haste along the way.

When we landed in our seats, the shirt stuck to my back. Sarah showed me she’d lost about a third of her wine. I offered her my more full glass and she shook her head, so I put in back in my cup holder. A couple of seconds later I heard a glassy scraping sound and saw that the wine glass was now somehow hanging upside down in the cup holder, a boozy puddle spreading across the floor.

The film was very funny, though.
